Can I keep my factory TPMS sensors when I get new tires?

In most cases your factory TPMS sensors can be reused when new tires are installed -- the installer transfers them from your old tires to the new ones.

In most cases, yes -- your factory TPMS sensors can be reused. The installer transfers the sensors from your existing tires to the new ones as part of the installation process.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Sensor age and battery life: TPMS sensor batteries last 5-10 years. If your sensors are aging, this is a good opportunity to replace them proactively
  • Recalibration: After new tires are installed, your vehicle may need to relearn the sensor positions. Most modern vehicles do this automatically after 10-20 miles of driving; some require a manual relearn procedure
  • Compatibility: Sensors are generally compatible across tire changes as long as the wheel rim stays the same
