Why are there markings on my new tires?

Paint marks, chalk, stickers, and colored dots on new tires are normal -- they are quality control and balancing reference marks from the manufacturing process.

It is completely normal to find various markings on new tires. Here is what they typically mean:

  • Colored paint dots or stripes: Quality control and balancing reference marks from the manufacturing process. They indicate tire uniformity and help installers position the tire optimally on the wheel. They are not defects.
  • White chalk or paint markings: Often added during inspection or shipping to indicate a passing quality check. These wash off with water.
  • Stickers: Size, load rating, and safety information required by the manufacturer and regulators. Typically removed by the installer.
  • Mold release compound: A slight surface residue from the manufacturing mold is normal and disappears within the first few miles of driving.
